Gayle Dantzler retired from The Tribune after 37 years as a reporter and editor. She has been a caregiver of pets from her earliest memories.

When Gayle and her husband, the late Frantz Dantzler, accepted a dog or cat into their household, that animal became the Dantzlers’ responsibility for its lifetime. With the commitment came all the joys and problems that one might expect from a sometimes mismatched menagerie.

This experience is the basis of Pets are Family — because pets are family!

Kindness to strangers

Veterinary clinics are businesses. They have to make money to survive. Sometimes fees seem high. But clinic overhead also is high. In order to stay current and to properly care for pets of all ages, sizes and species, clinics must … Continue reading

A love match for life

I was watching WNDU’s Saturday morning news program the other day and caught the pet adoption segment. A lively, affectionate young female Lab mix named Cinder was there from the Elkhart County Humane Society. Cinder had been at the shelter … Continue reading

Walking, weather or not

Here’s my answer to the dilemma that daily dog walkers face every winter: Bundle up your pooch as much as he or she will permit. In Hercules’ case, that means his thick blanket coat that Velcros snugly around his chest … Continue reading

The joys of holiday adoptions

Conventional advice from many experts says that people shouldn’t adopt pets during the holidays. I disagree — with a few conditions. There is no inherently bad time to adopt a new pet. What’s important is that family members be prepared … Continue reading

The most important lesson

As everyone who ever has had a new puppy knows, nothing is more critical to cementing the bond and making the whole family — including the puppy — happy than house training. It’s the lesson that comes first. How quickly … Continue reading

Not pets, just fellow creatures

Squirrels, wild birds, groundhogs and chipmunks aren’t pets. I understand that. They don’t need me. It has been a great nut and seed season. There’s plenty of food to be found in the yard, woods and marsh surrounding my home. … Continue reading
